We're pretty much fracked

A Bloomberg columnist says the day of reckoning is coming.  Roubini says we have reached the final 12th step as he described in "The Risk of a Systemic Financial Meltdown: 12 Steps to a Financial Disaster."

FCC comes to Stanford 4/17, please mr. government save the internets

The fact that we're even having a network neutrality debate is indicative of the monopoly or oligopoly most of us are stuck with when it comes to internet access.

Also indicative of artificial scarcity, in that there aren't public networks offering high speed net access via fiber, wireless, etc.

Setting up a free-software based audio studio

currently we're working on setting up a linux-based sound studio, starting with the ubuntustudio package. I also installed ubuntu's lowlatency version of the linux kernel.

So far I've found ubuntustudio to be a huge incohesive mess of sound apps which drop in to your "Sound & Video" menu on the ubuntu desktop.. Some apps do not even seem to run (LMMS freezes the whole machine when we try to open a project file).

It is going to take some time to try out all the apps and figure out a good production process.

what a whacky ruling on gay marriage

"Pointing out that stable relationships between parents are important for children, that straight couples can conceive children by 'accident,' and that gay couples can only have children with advance planning, Bloomberg and Spitzer argued that straight couples need the stability of marriage, but gay couples do not."

Today: A visit to the death star

Today I visited he.net's new Fremont location. It's quite a bit larger (and spookier) than their "760" Fremont facility. I had to walk through several hallways like this to reach our server room.
